Antique Motorcycle

TYPE 1: 1 to 9 (image needed)

The original series, as planned by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, was likely 1 thru 999, but I have chosen to separate them into Types 1, 2, & 3.

Narrow hole spacing

TYPE 2: 10 to 99

MOTORCYCLE on top, PENNA on bottom

Narrow hole spacing

TYPE 3: 100 to 999 (image needed)

TYPE 4: A1 to Z9

PENNA on top MOTORCYCLE on bottom.

Narrow hole spacing

TYPE 5, FORMAT 1:  A10 to Z99

PENNA on top, MOTORCYCLE on bottom

Types 5 is unique as some plates have PENNA on top and others have it on the bottom.  B10, B31 and G99 have it on the top while E18 has it on bottom. Narrow hole spacing.

TYPE 5, FORMAT 2:

MOTORCYCLE on top, PENNA on bottom

Starts between B60 and E18 and ends between E18 and G99.  Plate Y30 shows this same formatting. Narrow hole spacing, but plates in the Y series have wide hole spacing.

TYPE 6: 1A to 9Z

I can only assume that the opposite formatting of TYPE 4 likely exists also.

TYPE 7: 10A to 99Z

MOTORCYCLE on top, PENNA on bottom

Wide hole spacing

TYPE 8: 0A0 to 9Z9

MOTORCYCLE on top, PENNA on bottom

Street Rod

TYPE 1: 0000S/R to 3999S/R

First issued 1981, type still in use.

Pennsylvania and STREET ROD use a bold font.  The top red stripe is thinner than the bottom one.  Actually the red stripes on the earliest plate don't extend to the right plate border.  It is not known if this is part of the earliest format or something peculiar to this plate.  Some plates have validation stickers.

TYPE 2: 4000S/R to 4999S/R

Pennsylvania and STREET ROD use a bold font.  Both red stripes are the same thickness but don't extend to the border.  Most plates use validation stickers.

TYPE 3: 5000S/R to current high

Pennsylvania and STREET ROD have been changed to a lighter weight font.  The top red stripe is again thinner than the bottom one and extends to the border.  Almost all plates have validation stickers.

MISCELLANEOUS PLATES

Amateur Radio

TYPE 1: On www base, FCC Call Sign, beginning with A, K, N, or W.  Most PA Amateur Radio plates use the number 3 to designate the region.  The N0XOH call letter is used by someone who brought an existing call sign into PA when they moved.  The call letter is N0(zero)XOH.  In PA the number fonts are larger than the letters.  It's hard to distinguish this on the photo.  The WD5 call is the same situation.

If an owner desires a second Amateur Radio plate, it will be issued with the call sign plus a hyphen and the number two (-2).
