FORMAT 7: A00A to current high According to Steve Moskowitz, the holder of plate A00A, the graphic is a 1920 Oldsmobile Model 37 Roadster. Applications for an antique tag received after 1/31/05 get the new style plate, or a purple plate holder can replace that plate for $7.50 and a completed MV-44. All new plates will be in the A00A format - no reissues will be done of existing numbers. The new series began with A00A. Note that the characters spacing has been shifted to the right on later plates.
Note that some plate holders place an image of their own vehicle over the image on the plate. This plate to the right is also the new current high. In PA the use of the letters O and Q in the first position would have been skipped. |

Street Rod (1982) FORMAT 1: 0000S/R to 3999S/R First issued 1981, type still in use. Pennsylvania and STREET ROD use a bold font. The top red stripe is thinner than the bottom one. Actually the red stripes on the earliest plate don't extend to the right plate border. It is not known if this is part of the earliest format or something peculiar to this plate. Some plates have validation stickers.
FORMAT 2: 4000S/R to 4999S/R Pennsylvania and STREET ROD use a bold font. Both red stripes are the same thickness but don't extend to the border. Most plates use validation stickers. FORMAT 3: 5000S/R to current high Pennsylvania and STREET ROD have been changed to a lighter weight font. The top red stripe is again thinner than the bottom one and extends to the border. FORMAT 1: On www base, FCC Call Sign, beginning with A, K, N, or W. Most PA Amateur Radio plates use the
number 3 to designate the region. The N0XOH call letter is used by
someone who brought an existing call sign into PA when they moved. The call letter is N0(zero)XOH.
In PA the number fonts are larger than the letters. It's hard
to distinguish this on the photo. The WD5 call is the same situation.
If an owner desires a second Amateur Radio plate, it will be issued with the
call sign plus a hyphen and the number two (-2).

FORMAT 2: GBA-0000 to current high This image represents a revision to the www base and is similar in design to the new specialty plates. This plate type should have been replaced by 8/02, but is still in use with a 5/06 validation sticker.
Here is another plate from an later base than the one above but still wearing a current validation sticker. Seen 9/16/06.
This plate, which was just recently replaced, had a valid registration card which did concur with the plate number. Somehow it missed getting replaced way back when. The answer many have something to do with the purchase of a new vehicle in 2001 and this yellow-on-blue plate being issued rather than a www base plate. |

Re-Make of 1991 Keystone State Base Originally issued starting in 1991 with the series AAA-0000 to CEE-????. Owner requested to keep old number on new base. FORMAT 1: Up to 7 characters, one space or dash permitted but not both. At least two 8-digit plates have been confirmed ("HUMPBACK" and "MCERLANE"). At least the latter, if not both, have been recalled by PennDOT. The GJS-MSON is actually an invert error plate. Note the second S is upside down.
Passenger Vanity (visitPA base) FORMAT 2: This plate with its visitPA.com tagline, represents a departure from the www base. It is similar in design to the Specialty Plates except for the 'tag line'. 12/04
The plate to the right is actually reads 7 and the letter O, not seventy (70). Letter characters are smaller than numbers. The state coat of arms was added by the owner.

Severely Disabled Veteran (1986) The plate to the right is a bit of a mystery. The plate is obviously old, yet the number series is way too high for Disabled Veteran. My first guess is that it is an early issue of Severely Disabled Veteran. The plate to the right is another example of the plate above. While this one is not current it is a better image and offers some indication of vintage.

Special Veteran 00001"U/S" to 00099"U/S" reserve issue 00100"U/S" general issue, to current high Found this "#1" image of a veteran plate on PA State Rep. Dick Stevenson's website. When this new series of plates came out, the first over-the-counter plates were issued with a 00100 U/S format. Now it has been confirmed that plates with numbers below 100 have been issued. I have emailed Rep. Stevenson requesting a clarification and received no response. Now another much better image has been taken. Type added 7/17/05, moved to active 9/18 |

Flagship Niagara Mystery Plate This image was sent to me by Mike Barns. Note the absence of the EXP. 6/96 which is normal on the plates that were made available as souvenirs after the discontinuation of the Flagship Niagara plate. At the time when these plates were issued, this was a pet project of Governor Ridge (being from the Erie area). This plate could very well have been given to him. Image added 8/27/06 |

Information from Bruce Bufalini: Image taken September 22, 2001, at the University of Pittsburgh, Greensburg campus. The plate was on the front of a DEP (Dept. of Environmental Protection)-owned car. There was some sort of conference there held by the DEP, and at the time I had theorized that there was a DEP prefix plate series reserved for them, though I've never seen another such plate, sample or real issue, before or since. |

This plate type will be used on university-owned vehicles that are not used on public roadways. This includes small campus vehicles (ATVs, UTVs, tractors, Cushmans, etc.) that are used off road around the campus for identification purposes. Full size vehicles that travel on streets and roads will continue to use Pennsylvania Official Use plates issued by PennDOT. Plates measure 4" by 7" and use a bar coded validation sticker. Plate series begins with # 1. Type added 6/8/2008.

Conserve Wild Resources (prototypes) These two plates, along with the current Conserve Wild Resources (RC) River Otter plate, were candidates to replace the previous Conserve Wild Resources (WR) Saw Whet Owl plate. The upper plate shows the bald eagle and the lower one is the peregrine falcon. See respective plates above for more information.
The 'wildlife' plate to the right never made it either, it appears to be another variety of the resource conservation prototypes, however, it could also be a Hunting Angling (HA) plate. If anyone knows more about this plate, please share with us. |
