TYPE 1: 1 to 9 First issued 1954, type still in use. Debossed border
TYPE 2: 10 to 99 Debossed border
TYPE 3: 100 to 999 Debossed border
TYPE 4: 1000 to 9999 Debossed border
TYPE 5: A000 to Z999 Debossed border
TYPE 6: 000A to 999Z Debossed border
TYPE 7: AA00 to ZZ99 Embossed white border
TYPE 8: 00AA to 99ZZ Embossed white border High plate observed: 99ZS
TYPE 9: A00A to current high According to Steve Moskowitz, the holder of plate A00A, the graphic is a 1920 Oldsmobile Model 37 Roadster. Applications for an antique tag received after 1/31/05 get the new style plate, or a purple plate holder can replace that plate for $7.50 and a completed MV-44. All new plates will be in the A00A format - no reissues will be done of existing numbers. The new series began with A00A. |

TYPE 1: 1 to 9 (image needed) The original series as planned by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles was likely 1 to 999 but I have chosen to separate them into Types 1, 2, & 3. TYPE 2: 10 to 99 MOTORCYCLE on top, PENNA on bottom
TYPE 3: 100 to 999 (image needed)
TYPE 4: A1 to Z9 PENNA on top MOTORCYCLE on bottom.
TYPE 5, STYLE 1: A10 to Z99 PENNA on top, MOTORCYCLE on bottom Types 5 is a strange series as some of the plates have PENNA on top and others have it on the bottom. B10, B31 and G99 have it on the top while E18 has it on bottom. TYPE 5, STYLE 2: MOTORCYCLE on top, PENNA on bottom Starts between B60 and E18 and ends between E18 and G99. Plate Y30 shows this same formatting.
TYPE 6: 1A to 9Z I can only assume that the opposite formatting of TYPE 4 likely exists also.
TYPE 7: 10A to 99Z MOTORCYCLE on top, PENNA on bottom
TYPE 8: 0A0 to 9Z9 MOTORCYCLE on top, PENNA on bottom
TYPE 9: AA0 to current high MOTORCYCLE on top, PENNA on bottom (format added 9/11/05) Plate measures 4½ x 8

TYPE 1: 0000S/R to 3999S/R First issued 1981, type still in use. Pennsylvania and STREET ROD use a bold font. The top red stripe is thinner than the bottom one. Actually the red stripes on the earliest plate don't extend to the right plate border. It is not known if this is part of the earliest format or something peculiar to this plate. Some plates have validation stickers.
TYPE 2: 4000S/R to 4999S/R Pennsylvania and STREET ROD use a bold font. Both red stripes are the same thickness but don't extend to the border. Most plates use validation stickers. TYPE 3: 5000S/R to current high Pennsylvania and STREET ROD have been changed to a lighter weight font. The top red stripe is again thinner than the bottom one and extends to the border. Almost all plates have validation stickers. |

Type not current but with current sticker. Both of these older plates are on busses owned by legitimate bus companies. The ontinued use of a few older yellow-on-blue bus plates remains a mystery.
TYPE 1: BA10000 to BA47999 without the dash separator. When PA replated back in 2000, all existing bus plates were reissued on a plate for plate basis. TYPE 1: On www base, FCC Call Sign, beginning with A, K, N, or W. Most PA Amateur Radio plates use the
number 3 to designate the region. The N0XOH call letter is used by
someone who brought an existing call sign into PA when they moved. The call letter is N0(zero)XOH.
In PA the number fonts are larger than the letters. It's hard
to distinguish this on the photo. The WD5 call is the same situation.
If an owner desires a second Amateur Radio plate, it will be issued with the
call sign plus a hyphen and the number two (-2).

characteristics the same as Type 1. |
